Overview

This is a modern, 4 star hotel, on site at Stansted Airport.  They’ve built plenty of leisure and business facilities to keep you happy, whether you’re trying to kick off a summer holiday or organise a conference.  It seems to be doing the job, since guests were giving it 4 out of 5 when we searched the internet for reviews in March 2010.

Location

The Hilton is within the perimeter of Stansted Airport.  It’s a 6 minute shuttle bus ride to the terminal.  The hotel is fully double glazed to minimize noise.

Parking

Overnight parking is available for residents.  There’s a charge of £8 for leaving your car between 4 pm and 8 am.  The car park is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  If you want to leave your car at the hotel whilst you are away on holiday, you can book a park and fly package including a room for the night and long term parking.

Check-in/out and breakfast

Check-in is from 3 pm; if you need to get in earlier than that you can telephone in advance and they’ll see what they can do.  You can check out up until noon, but if you want a long lie, ask at reception when you arrive – they’ll do their best to give you a late check-out.  They also have an express check-out service; to use this, leave your credit card details at reception when you check in.  Porters can give you a hand with your luggage when you’re arriving or departing.  There’s a full English or continental breakfast on offer between 5 am and 10 am, or 11 am at weekends when you can have an extra hour in bed (as long as you don’t have to get up to catch your flight!)

Shuttle bus

They run a shuttle bus to the airport which takes 6 minutes.  It costs £2 per adult and children under 16 are free (take it as a compliment if the driver doesn’t charge you!)  It sets off from the hotel every 30 minutes between 4.15 am and 12.45 am, at quarter to and quarter past the hour.  The shuttle running the other way, from the airport to the hotel, sets off on the hour and the half hour from 4.30 am until 1 am.

Hotel facilities

The Hilton London Stanted Airport has a fine dining restaurant and a bar serving snacks and alcohol.  There’s also a coffee shop where you can get a pastry, or a take away meal, if you’ve got a very early departure.  As you would expect in a hotel of this size and class, there are extensive health and fitness facilities.  This includes a gym, swimming pool, Jacuzzi, sauna, steam room and solarium.  Sounds good, but it’s no match for the real sun and the outdoor pool on your holiday!  For those on business rather than pleasure, it’s got 16 meeting rooms for anything from 2 to 250 people.  There’s WiFi throughout the building, but you have to pay to use it.

Guest rooms

There are 239 guest rooms.  Double and twin guest rooms are 17 metres square.  They have on-demand movies and pay per view TV, which you can watch on the 32-inch LCD screen.  There’s a clock radio with MP3 connection, telephone, hair dryer, iron and Crabtree and Evelyn toiletries in the bathroom. Family rooms are the same but with an extra single bed.  You can also get interconnecting rooms if you want to keep an eye on the kids.  The deluxe rooms have a few more special touches, like a marble bathroom, bathrobe and slippers.  The suites have extra space – they’re 34 metres square.  They have 1 double bed and a sofabed.  There’s WiFi internet access throughout the building, but this costs extra.  All rooms are air conditioned (for the few days of British summer each year!)

Accessibility

There are accessible rooms and all areas of the hotel are accessible to wheelchair users.  Hard of hearing guests can pick up a vibrating fire alarm from reception.

Directions

From the M11 northbound, exit at Junction 8a (signposted Stansted Airport).  For Southbound, junction 8.  Take the slip road that has signs for the long stay car park. At the roundabout, take the 1st exit which is signposted for the Hilton Hotel. Go straight through the 2nd roundabout and you’ll see the hotel on the left-hand side.  From the M25, exit at Junction 27 (signposted M11 Stansted Airport). It’ll take you about 20 minutes to reach the Hilton London Stansted Airport. The nearest train station is at Stansted Airport.  You can catch the shuttle bus from there to the hotel.

Airport views

You can get some good views of the airport from this hotel – the best bedrooms to book are the ones facing the airport on the top (third) floor.  From them you can see planes departing on runway 23.  You can’t take pictures from the hotel, but if you walk down to the runway 05 threshold you can get some good shots.  It’s about half a mile from the hotel.

Location

This is the only hotel within walking distance of the terminal building, which is 2 minutes away via a covered pathway.  The guest rooms are soundproofed to make sure you’re not disturbed by any noise from the airport.

Parking

There are 200 parking spaces at the hotel.  If you don’t book your parking along with your room, it’ll cost you £10 for the first night and £20 for any additional nights.  So we’d recommend that you book a Stansted Radisson Blu room with parking included.

Check- in/out and breakfast

You can check-in to the hotel from  2 pm.  Those poor souls who have to catch an early flight in the morning can fit in a continental breakfast between 4 am and 6.30 am.  Guests departing after that have the opportunity to load up at the Super Breakfast hot and cold buffet.  If you’re running late, take the Grab & Run breakfast option and make use of the express check-out service.  If you’ve got time to spare, late check-outs after the normal noon deadline are possible.

Shuttle bus

There’s no shuttle bus.  It’s only a 2 minute walk to the terminal along an undercover pedestrian walkway.

Hotel Facilities

Within the building, there are 3 restaurants and 2 bars to choose from.  There is also a health and fitness club with gym (it’s nice to have, but we never use them, because we’re going on holiday!),  swimming pool (we’ll wait for the pool in the hot weather, thanks), sauna and spa.  The hotel can cater for meetings and events and business services are available.

Guest Rooms

This is a big hotel with 500 guest rooms, including 20 suites.  They’re decorated in 3 different styles so you can choose the one that fits your personality – the fiery “Urban”, the calm “Ocean” or the quirky “Chili”.   There are family rooms with interconnecting doors for those travelling with youngsters.   All the bedrooms have flat screen TVs with satellite channels, complimentary wireless internet and laptop safes.  As standard, they are all air-conditioned are supplied with iron, trouser press, mini-bar and tea and coffee making facilities. You can upgrade to a business class room and get a good view of the runway as well as a range of freebies – in-house movies, robe, slippers, newspapers and magazines and a Nespresso coffee machine.  Junior suites offer all this plus more space and a sitting area.  Full suites are lit by large bay windows, and have a dining area, sitting area, and 2 separate bathrooms  With all these comforts, you might never want to leave the room, so it’s a good job that room service is available for all guests 24 hours a day.

Accessibility

The walkway between the Radisson Blu and the airport has ramps, as do all bars and restaurants within the hotel.  They also have accessible rooms, with lower fittings and fixtures and walk-in showers.  There are hearing loop facilities in the meeting rooms.

Directions

The closest rail and bus station is at Stansted Airport, which is 2 minutes’ walk from the hotel.  When leaving the Stansted Railway Station, the chaps at Radissons have made your life easy by putting up signs to point you in the right direction.   Those arriving by car should follow signs for the airport terminal and the hotel is found just after the building on the left.

Airport views

You can get great views over the airport from the high level bedrooms.  All the business class rooms have good views of the runway.  They allow you to watch the aircraft at one of the Ryanair satellite terminals, although it’s not a good spot for photographs.  The Hilton has access to a great vantage point for taking pictures.
