This 2 star hotel is part of the Wyndham group and is based in a motorway service area on the road to Stansted  Airport. Not the most glamorous start to your holiday, you might think, but it’s one of the cheapest hotels near Stansted Airport and it gets pretty good reviews on the internet.  When we looked in March 2010, guests were giving it an average of 3 out of 5.  The rooms have got the basic facilities you’ll need for an overnight stay, and although it doesn’t have its own restaurant, there are food and shopping outlets in the main building of the service area.

Book a room

The Days Inn is at the Welcome Break Birchanger Green service area, at Junction 8 of the M11.  That’s the junction right before Stansted, so the airport is 10 minutes away by taxi or car.  You can access the service area from both the northbound and southbound carriageways.

If you’ve come in your own car you can make use of the free parking outside the hotel overnight.  There’s holiday parking at the Welcome Break Service Area adjacent to the hotel.  This costs £8 per night and has to be booked separately with Welcome Break.

Check-in/out and breakfast

Check-in is from 2 pm and check-out is up until 11 am.  You can pre-order a Continental breakfast which has to be collected from reception.  It costs £4.95 and you can book it for whatever time you wish between 4 am and 11 am.  If you would like to set yourself up with a cooked breakfast, you can get one in the main building of the motorway service area.   This is just a brief walk along a pedestrian footpath from the hotel reception.

Shuttle bus

There’s no shuttle bus.  A taxi can be pre-booked by reception the night before your departure.  It takes about 10 minutes and costs £10.

Hotel facilities

There isn’t a restaurant within the hotel itself but there are a few places to eat in the main building of the motorway service area which is just behind the hotel.  There are vending and ice machines in the hotel in case you are desperate for a snack or a cold drink and can’t be bothered going across to the other building. There’s a 24 hour reception and they’ll happily provide you with a number of useful freebies – newspapers, local phone calls, faxing and photocopying.

Guest rooms

There are 60 bedrooms over 2 floors.  They all come with the usual bits of kit – TV, clock radio and hair dryer.  Executive rooms are air conditioned and have the added extras of coffee machines, irons and snack packs with water.  You can request a lap top safe and there’s Wi-Fi internet access in all the rooms, although you’ve got to pay for that.

They have accessible rooms with roll in showers for wheelchair users and wider door frames.

Drive into the Welcome Break Service Area at Junction 8 on the M11.  You can access it from both directions on the motorway.  The nearest train station is Stansted Airport.

Airport views

There aren’t any views of the planes from here, but you will see a lot of cars!
