This is a 3 star bed and breakfast in a 300 year old detached cottage near Stansted Airport.  Its timber beams and open fireplaces make it an interesting place for a stopover.  Nobody’s reviewed it yet online, so we’re not able to give it a guest rating (March 2010).

Tap Hall Bed and Breakfast is opposite Hatfield Forest, which is owned by the National Trust.  If you’ve got the energy, you could go for a nice walk.  The B&B is about 5 minutes’ drive from Stansted Airport, but it’s not under the flight path, so you’ll have peace and quiet for a bit of kip after that walk!

There’s a place to park your car at the cottage overnight but they don’t offer airport parking.

Check-in/out and breakfast

Check-in is from 4 pm up until midnight, but if you have a late arriving flight the owners will wait up for you.  Check-out is at 10.30 am.  If you have to leave before 6 am (ouch!) you will be given a tray in your room with a cold breakfast of croissant and cereal.  Between 6 and 7 am you can take continental breakfast in the dining room and a Full English Breakfast between 7 and 9 am.

Shuttle bus

They offer free transfers to the airport from 6 am.  If you’re unlucky enough to be leaving earlier than that, you can catch a taxi, which will set you back about £7.  Tap Hall Bed and Breakfast does not offer a pick up at the airport.

Hotel facilities

Tap Hall Bed and Breakfast is a 300 year old cottage with lots of original features, like timber beams and open fireplaces.  There’s a free WiFi connection throughout the building and a garden for guests to use.  They can accommodate children who are over 5 years old.  There’s space for car parking beside the hotel overnight.  There aren’t any evening meals on offer, but there’s a pub within walking distance so you won’t go hungry!

Guest rooms

You can take a twin room or a double en suite room.  There are 3 altogether.  They all have TV, tea and coffee, mini fridge and hair dryer, which is all you really need for an overnighter before you hop on the plane.

Unfortunately, due to the age of the property, there aren’t any facilities for disabled guests.

To get to Tap Hall, leave the M11 at junction 8 and get onto the B1256 towards Takeley.  Drive for about a mile and a half and then go along Takeley Street. Tap Hall is located on the left; it’s about 400 yards past the speed camera (watch out for that one).   They have a big red sign outside; you can’t miss it.  The nearest train station is Stansted Airport and Bishop’s Stortford is also nearby.

Airport views

No views of the planes from here; if that’s what you’re after, try the on-site hotel Radisson SAS Stansted Airport.
